Week 1: Cuenca

We flew from LA through Miami to Quito, capital of Ecuador. Overnight stay and then a short flight next day to Cuenca.

We rented a small apartment right in center of Cuenca. Our hosts, a couple from NC, even came to pick us up from the airport. Cuenca is a beautiful city at 8,000 feet elevation, and a population of about 350,000. It has 4 rivers running through the small city.

First impressions: Cuenca reminded us of Seville and Granada in Spain, narrow streets, lots of people, huge farmers markets, cathedrals every block, restaurants, shops. The weather is interestingly same as San Diego, upper 60’s during the day and low 50’s at night. And no bugs!

A  lot of “Gringo’s” ex-pats make Cuenca their home.  Barb and Rick, friends of Reeta’s sister and now our friends, live here and have been extremely helpful in guiding us.  The guidance started with gourmet times together – the way we like it.

The higher elevation does put a crimp on us climbing small hills, but we are getting used to it.

Easter weekend very festive – whole town closed on Sunday.

Another day of touristy look around and then we plan to get down to tackling the likes and dislikes of long-term living.
